The Red Onion from Tropea, imported by the Phoenicians in ancient times, is still cultivated today in Calabria. The onion’s oval form, its extraordinary sweetness and enjoyable taste derive from the peculiarities of the microclimate where it is grown. In winter, because of its proximity to the sea, the climate is stable, with no sudden changes in temperature and lands are loamy and fertile.
